Our Aims

HealthWORKS Newcastle is a registered charity based within the Health Resource Centre in Benwell in the West End of Newcastle. We opened in 1996 to provide services and activities to enable local people to take more control over their health and quality of life. The purpose of HealthWORKS is to find new and interesting ways of helping people to better health, whatever their age, health problems, ability or background.

We aim to:

• provide programmes and activities to make it possible for people to increase fitness levels
• provide information and advice in relation to health information and health rights
• provide a venue for other service providers to work from if the work they do has the same aims
• join in the development and maintenance of local networks and partnerships concerned with improving health
• listen to what our users say and make sure that our services reflect what they want and need

The Local Picture

The Health Resource Centre is based in the heart of the inner west of Newcastle upon Tyne, an area containing the wards of Elswick, Benwell & Scotswood, Fenham, Wingrove and Westgate. This area has some of the highest levels of social disadvantage and ill health in the Northern Region. There are high levels of unemployment and poor housing, anti-social behaviour and low educational attainment.
