Allotment Show September 2010
The show, organised by Newcastle’s Allotment Working Group and the city council, is aimed at anyone who grows their own and looks to celebrate locally-produced food
For the first time ever, the Allotment Show has had food demonstrations.
Staff and volunteers from the Food and Nutrition team at HealthWORKS Newcastle took part.
Julie Stephens, Food and Nutrition Manager commented ‘we are delighted to be part of this fantastic event. Recipes include Courgette biscuits, Chocolate and Beetroot cake, Tomato and Lentil Soup, Courgette and Pesto soup and Lettuce and Pea soup. All of the vegetables used in the recipes will be home grown straight out of the allotment.'
Lead volunteer Linda Woodcock and Change4Life in West Newcastle Cordinator Kath English, were on hand to assist, with 200 people tasting samples of Chocolate and Beetroot cake and soups , all with a healthier twist , and still as delicious as ever.
Of the people sampling the recipes one said,' I would never have thought to use my beetroot in a cake....marvelous idea and tasty too!'
